Thanks for joining us for what for most people is the first coronation they've ever seen.

King Charles III was officially crowned alongside his second wife, Queen Camilla, at Westminster Abbey in London in a ceremony steeped in history.

The pair looked calm as both were officially crowned as monarchs as part of a two-hour ceremony.

The ancient event was attended by dignitaries from around the world, as well as famous faces and hand-picked commoners, including a handful of special Aussies.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, along with the children, stole the show as usual, with Catherine especially regal in royal robes.

Prince Harry also turned up for his father's long-awaited day, but appears to have headed straight back to California.

Meanwhile, as Australia heads to bed, the celebrations continue in London, where thousands lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the momentous parades and royal family, despite the wet weather.

King Charles lives the moment he was born for

A new King has been crowned.

After seven decades of waiting, and two more hours of British bombast fuelled by gold, trumpets, choirs, celebrity and circumstance, King Charles III lived the moment he was born for.

Queen Elizabeth II's son, sitting on a two-metre-tall, 700-year-old wooden chair, holding two golden sceptres, valuable and controversial, waited calmly as Anglican Archbishop Justin Welby approached with St Edward's Crown.

A balcony encore

After heading back inside, the King and Queen have returned to the balcony for a second royal wave.

The huge crowd, many waving Union Jack flags, is reminiscent of wartime shots of people gathering at the palace to celebrate.

Historic moment in front of tens of thousands

The King and Queen have appeared on the balcony at Buckingham Palace to cheers from the adoring crowds.

They are joined by Camilla's three grandchildren and Prince George, who were the pages.

Other "working royals" - the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and Princess Anne and Tim Lawrence - also joined them.

Camilla's sister and friend, who were by her side during the coronation, also appeared.

A helicopter flypast took place, along with aerial display team the Red Arrows.

A Historic Battle of Britain flight was cancelled.

King and Queen on balcony

Tens of thousands of royal fans have been allowed to walk up The Mall towards Buckingham Palace

A very organised operation allowed a few hundred at a time to make their way to the gates of Buckingham Palace. However, the crowds stretched all the way back to Admiralty Arch on the famous London street.

They're all poised to see the new King and Queen and other members of the family appear on the balcony.

A large flypast by historic aircraft has reportedly been scaled back due to low cloud on what has become a very wet day.

Couple back at Palace

The King and Queen have arrived back at Buckingham Palace.

They have taken part in an inspection of troops who have gathered on the rear lawn of the palace.

A flypast is due to happen in just over 30 minutes - if the weather is good enough.

It's at that point the family will appear on the balcony.

That's not thought to include Prince Harry or Prince Andrew, who were both seen getting into separate cars after the Abbey ceremony.
