Top 12 most mispronounced places in Australia revealed

Australia is full of wonderful places and some have names that are easier to pronounce than others.

It turns out many of us are turning to Google to find out the proper pronunciation.

Online learning platform Preply has analysed search data for more than 300 well-known locations and ranked them by most popular search.

Can you pronounce the names of these Aussie places?

The capital of Queensland and the state's most popular city came in at number 12.

While some pronounce it as "Brihz-bain", its correct pronunciation is "Briz-bn".

11. Orange, New South Wales

Orange in the New South Wales central west is known for its award-winning restaurants, cool-climate wines and spectacular scenery.

However what some do not know is how to say the name of the regional city. While some pronounce it as "Ornj", it is pronounced as "Orr-inj".

Located in Western Australia, Derby is one of three towns in the Kimberley region to have a population of more than 2000.

Outsiders may call it "Dar-be", but the locals say "Der-be".

Queensland town Warwick is the Rose and Rodeo Capital.

When you visit the Queensland town, be sure to call it "Wawr-ik" as opposed to "Wa-rick".

Ngunnawal in the Australian Capital Territory is named in tribute to the the Ngunnawal people, the original inhabitants of the area.

The right way to say the name is "NUN-nah-wol" but people commonly mispronounce it by saying "NGUN-uh-wawl".

The inner city Sydney suburb of Balmain is commonly mispronounced as "Bal-mah-n" but the right way to say it is "Bal-mane".

While some call it "Can-berra" the correct way to say it is "Can-bra".

If you're visiting Gloucester on the NSW mid north coast, be sure to call it "Gloss-ter" rather than "Glow-kester".

The scenic town which is part of the Barrington Coast came in at number five on the list.

Launceston is must-see when you're visiting Tasmania.

In order to fit in with the locals, be sure to call it "Lonn-ses-tun" rather than "Lawn-ses-tun" or "Lawn-ston".

If you want to be particularly familiar, the city is also known as "Launnie".

Perhaps surprisingly, Melbourne ranked number two on the list.

While commonly mispronounced as "Mel-born", it is actually called "Mel-burn".

While some call it "Pr-ahn" or "Pra-ran", it is correct to say "Pran" or "Pr-aan".

Coming in at number one on the list is Cairns in Queensland.

More people have searched for how to say this city in the state's tropical far north than any other place in Australia.

For reference, the right way to say it is "Cans" rather than "Kerns" or "Kens".
