Sydney school students 'being baked' without airconditioning

Students at 350 Sydney schools will be left to swelter this summer as government funding for air-conditioning has halted.
Ashfield Public is one school struggling without air-conditioners.
Some students at the school have fainted from the heat, while others have reported feeling tired and irritable trying to sit through lessons in close to 35-degree heat.

The school's Parents and Citizens Association committee applied for government assistance in 2019 through the Cooler Classrooms fund, facilitated by the previous government, but say they have been left out to dry.
As part of their application, they used thermometers to test how hot the classrooms get.
"Several of our classrooms are consistently measuring 30 degrees... and if you take into account how the room actually feels... they're measuring above 35 frequently," parent Gemma Collier told 9News.
Students told 9News they felt like "they were being baked in an oven".
Ashfield Public is one of 350 schools on the waitlist for Aircons that will miss out, 9News can reveal.
A further 90 are expected to have air-conditioners installed over the next six months.
Deputy Premier and Education and Early Learning Minister Prue Car says she inherited the problem from the Perrottet government.

"The previous government left this government with an unfunded program of air conditioning expectations - and that is true," Car said.
The Coalition government spent $500 million on the air conditioning program, which expired in June this year.
The school is now trying to independently fundraise to get air conditioners into classrooms before summer starts.
"The problem with air conditioning in schools is not going to go away, so solutions need to be found to make sure that our schools are safe working and learning environments," Parents and Citizens Association president Sarah Newman told 9News.
Any future applications from schools to receive funding for air-conditioners will be approved on a case-by-case basis and will be allocated from the general school maintenance budget.
